Are We The People They Warned Us About?

Today's rendition of FAD is brought to you by the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. This article discusses the coming generational shift from the Boomers and Gen-Xers to the kids who were raised on GI Joe, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers (whatever it is that girls watched from 1980 through 1995 [Care Bears?]), and, most importantly, THE INTERNET!!

Tell us, BBL-uminati: Is the generational shift a potential paradigm shift (away from bigger government) like Prof. Burkee argues, or is it just another example of the recurring cycle of youth being optimistic and then becoming more jaded with age?

  1. The latter. My parents said they would never be like their parents who, in turn, said they'd never be like their parents. Everyone has turned into what they said they would not. Res ipsa.

  2. Don't know if I agree with Burkee's conclusions, but it definitely is easy to point to potential causes--and the internet's the biggest of the bunch you list, in my opinion.

In particular, the internet makes our generation keenly aware of things former generations were not. WebMD (and its peers) are a case-in-point; people in our generation tend to believe they can unilaterally identify infirmities, and actively undertake processes to correct them.
